Cindy Blackman Santana, known for her drumming expertise with both Lenny Kravitz and Carlos Santana, is set to light up The Carlyle Room in Northwest D.C. this Friday and Saturday.

Talking to WTOP, Blackman Santana shared her excitement about the upcoming performances, promising a mix of originals and revamped classics like Wayne Shorter’s works. She praised her band’s versatility, highlighting their ability to infuse new energy into familiar tunes, promising an engaging musical journey for the audience.

Born in 1959 in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Blackman Santana’s musical journey started early, influenced by a diverse range of genres including funk, jazz, classical, and rock ‘n roll. Despite dropping out of Berklee College of Music to perform with The Drifters, she gained invaluable experience that shaped her career.

Her big break came in 1993 when Lenny Kravitz handpicked her as his touring drummer, marking the beginning of a seventeen-year collaboration. Notably featured in the concert documentary “Alive from Planet Earth,” her time with Kravitz solidified her reputation as a powerhouse drummer.

A chance encounter with Carlos Santana at a music festival in Germany led to a deeper connection years later when they found themselves musically and spiritually aligned. Carlos’s onstage proposal during a concert in Chicago in 2010 marked the beginning of their enduring partnership.

Reflecting on their journey, Blackman Santana emphasizes the joy of sharing their love for music, describing it as a form of divine communication that transcends all barriers. Their union, both personal and professional, continues to thrive after fourteen years, making each performance a celebration of their shared passion and love.
